New weather maps are forecasting the first snow of the season as a bitter -2C freeze blasts Britain. WXCharts has predicted a wintery chill to sweep over the north of the UK on October 2, bringing low temperatures and some very light snow.

Snow is forecast over higher ground, namely the Cairngorms, Ullapool, Inverness and Fort William in central and north Scotland and over the Lake District in the north of England. It's thought these areas will get a dusting of snow overnight, with nothing substantial lying on the ground.

Netweather has said it will be coldest in central Scotland over the Cairngorms, where it will be -2C. It will sit between 0C and -1C across much of the region from Fort William to Aberdeen.

North and south Scotland (including the likes of Wick, Edinburgh, and Dumfries) and parts of north England, namely Carlisle, will see lows of between 0C and 2C.

The rest of northern England (Newcastle, Lancaster, Sheffield, Liverpool) will see the mercury range from 2C to 7C. It will be slightly warmer in Northern Ireland (Derry, Belfast) and Wales (Conwy, Cardiff) will sit between 2C and 4C.

The midlands (Birmingham, Oxford) and East Anglia (Cambridge, Ipswich) will see lows of between 3C and 6C. The south of England (Plymouth, Brighton, Dover) will be between 4C and 5C.

Jim Dale, a meteorologist with British Weather Services, told Express.co.uk: “It will be a short-lived Arctic blast. But any snow will be confined to the mountain tops and as soon as the cold air is in, it’s gone again by the weekend.

“This kind of event isn’t so uncommon for the Highlands and Grampians but in recent years it has become less and less of an event and seldom lasts.”

Met Office five-day forecast

Tonight, evening showers across Wales and the southwest will fade. Low cloud, with drizzle in places across the northeast will expand westwards across central areas. Elsewhere, it will be mostly dry with clear spells.

Tomorrow will be largely dry in the north with sunny spells, especially in the northwest. Showers or longer spells of rain will spread across the south, with them being heavy and thundery at times. It will be warm for many.
