Despite a cold start to the summer, Britain is set to be hit by a 31C African blast as early as this Friday, according to new forecasts.

The Met Office is predicting that London and surrounding areas could jump up to 30C-31C on Friday, July 19 thanks to air from the south. The soaring temperatures will bring sunny skies with them.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill warned that Thursday and Friday night will be a “tropical night”, and a heat health alert has also been issued.

He said: “Temperatures are set to rise in London. Some places will see 30C-31C which are most likely.

“Temperatures will stay in the high teens/ low 20s in the night between Thursday-Friday which will make it a tropical night.

“There is a heat health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency because it's going to be hot by day and uncomfortably warm by night, particularly towards the Southeast of the UK.”

Weather maps from WxCharts have turned a scorching red between Friday-Saturday as the UK prepares to sizzle.

While temperatures will be highest in the southeast, it will be between 26C and 28C in the Midlands with temperatures dropping to between 22C and 25C in the north of England and the southwest of England.

It will be coldest in southwest Scotland and north Wales with highs of 15C. In the rest of Wales, Scotland and north England, it will be between 17C and 22C.

However, Mr Burkill warned that the north western parts of the country could experience some downpours thanks to an "active jet stream coming from the eastern side of Canada".

Met office outlook for Friday to Sunday:

"Mostly dry and very warm or hot on Friday. Thundery showers on Saturday and likely remaining hot in the east or southeast. Cooler, cloudier with some rain likely on Sunday."
