Met Office weather maps reveal that 25 areas could be warmer than Ibiza tomorrow, with temperatures potentially soaring as high as 26C.

Today is anticipated to be the hottest day of the year so far, with the mercury potentially reaching 24C. That record is expected to be broken again on Wednesday, as Met Office forecasters predict local highs of 26C.

Temperature anomaly maps have turned a deep red, indicating the mercury will climb well above the seasonal norm. The GFS weather model suggests the most significant temperature surges will be felt across England and Wales.

The Met Office's own weather maps indicate that as many as 25 towns and cities will record temperatures of 20C or above, making them hotter than several popular European holiday destinations. By comparison, Ibiza in Spain is only expected to reach 19C tomorrow.

While Wednesday is set to be a scorcher, the Met Office has cautioned of a "big change" on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to plummet to between 10C and 13C in certain areas.

"It's all purely down to wind direction at this time of year," a Met Office spokesperson said. "For the next couple of days we're dragging in that warm, southerly wind, which will allow us to see temperatures reach the mid-20s.

"As we go into Thursday, we'll see temperatures return to normal for the time of year as we see the weather turn more changeable with advances of rain and showers."

BBC meteorologists are anticipating a comparable downturn in conditions.

The BBC forecast states: "Tomorrow, western Scotland and Northern Ireland will remain mostly cloudy with the odd spot rain. Dry with variable cloud in eastern Scotland. England and Wales will be warm and sunny once again.

"Thursday will be cooler with spells of rain and showers moving eastwards across much of the UK. On Friday, eastern and southern areas look set to be mostly dry with sunny spells."
