Britons could face unexpected cold weather in June as forecasts show temperatures dropping as low as three degrees on two days in the coming weeks.

According to WXCharts, Temperatures could drop to three degrees in the north of Scotland on June 21 around 6am, while the rest of the UK sees temperatures floating between four and six degrees.

At the same time on that Friday, temperatures will rise to between six and seven degrees in Scotland while the south of England will see highs of 12 in Devon.

Many across Britain will have been caught off guard by June's underwhelming weather, bringing with it rain and average temperatures rather than the usual sunshine.

Experts say this weather is likely to continue for the rest of the month.

Ellie Glaisyer, a Met Office meteorologist, said the temperatures were “disappointing for June."

The Met Office has added: “There are tentative signs of building high pressure from the west at times, but showers or longer spells of rain are also likely to affect the country, with the eastern half of England and Scotland on balance most likely to experience wetter, or at last more showery weather.”

Dr Robert Thompson, a meteorologist from the University of Reading, says the reason the weather has been so bad in Britain is because of the Atlantic jet stream, which is bringing in cold air from Greenland and Iceland.

He added: “Yes, at lunchtime you needed a coat, and it is not what you expect from June - but we have got so used to rising temperatures caused by global warming that we expect the months to be warmer than average.

“It looks like we will return to a more normal position toward the end of this weekend...Things are changing with global warming."

Meteorologist Simon King gave his analysis for the BBC: "Temperatures will however come closer to the average for mid-June. Our perception of 'warmer' may be countered by an unsettled spell of weather though with spells of rain, thunderstorms and brisk winds into the weekend. We may have to wait until the last week of June before more settled weather makes it feel more summery.

"According to our latest monthly outlook, there are signs that high pressure will build up near or over parts of the UK for an extended period. This would increase the likelihood of calmer and drier weather with temperatures rising to around or above average."
