Weather experts at the Met Office have given their verdict on the ‘hottest day of the year’ which bookies say is set to fall when England play Serbia in their opening Euro 2024 fixture.

Forecasters are predicting a scorching summer with temperatures tipping 30C.

And now bookmaker Ladbrokes has given odds-on 5/4 chances of the hottest day of the year arriving on June 16, when England kick off their Euro 2024 campaign.

England fans across the country will be lining up to cheer on the team and beer gardens will be rammed, while barbecues will be sizzling.

The Met Office has confirmed that hot weather is likely to be on the way in exactly that period.

The weather outfit’s long range forecast for June 11 to 20 said: “Thereafter a build of pressure will probably bring settled conditions across the country for a few days, with dry, sunny conditions prevailing.

“While confidence in the timing of any change of type is uncertain, from the middle of the week towards the weekend dry conditions may start to decline with a greater chance of more unsettled weather developing.

“Should this happen, wettest conditions are likely to be in the north and west, with driest weather in the south and east. There is still a chance that drier conditions could remain in place more widely. Temperatures likely to be near or slightly below average at first, perhaps slightly above normal later.”

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes added: "All eyes will be on Southgate's lions next Sunday, and the odds suggest we'll be treated to a record-breaking scorcher before the late kick-off.

“Temperatures are finally on the up and we could well be on course for a record-breaking hot summer as a result.”

Exacta Weather, meanwhile, suggests the peak of the heat won’t land until mid-July - which would line up perfectly with the Euros final in July 14.

Forecaster James Madden said: “Our earlier high-confidence forecast for a major heatwave or super heatwave is still on target to develop in or around mid-July for the UK”
