Teeth-chattering temperatures are on the way for the country in the next few days with some parts of the UK set to shudder in 1C.

New weather maps and charts show a wintery blast hitting the UK this weekend with the coldest conditions gripping the nation on Sunday June 9.

Despite meteorological summer having already started, a band of low pressure sitting above the British Isles is drawing down freezing air from the far north and Arctic.

And maps from WXCharts show on higher ground and exposed parts of Scotland there could even be the chance of several centimetres of snow falling.

In England and Wales the mercury is likely to hover around a chilly 5C, even in London and the south, but for the Scottish capital Edinburgh it could be as low as 1C.

Writing her weather blog for netweather.tv, senior forecaster Jo Farrow cooler air had reached the UK, adding: "In the strong June sunshine, and away from the breeze, it can still feel pleasantly warm but this is not summer heat.

"If a shower passes by or in the wind or the shade, it does feel cool, even nippy. This air originates near the Arctic and has brought snow to the mountains of Scotland."

Images of snowfall in The Highlands have been shared on social media and according to the Met Office it will be "remaining cool and showery throughout Sunday and Monday, with the potential for a more prolonged spell of rain for a time in the northwest."

It's not unheard of for winter to bite back in June, and since weather records began there have been instances when snow has fallen even in southern England at this time of year.

The Guardian reports that on June 2, 1975, snowflakes briefly fell on the Lord's cricket ground in London and further north in Derbyshire an inch fell in Buxton.

The Met Office states the lowest temperature ever recorded in the UK in June is held by two locations, Santon Downham in Norfolk on June 1 and 3, 1962, and in Dalwhinnie, Scottish Highlands on June 9, 1955.

Both parts of the country logged a bitterly cold -5.6C on these dates.
