With reports of hot weather on the way next week, staying cool will be top of many people’s priorities. But as the UK doesn’t tend to enjoy lots of sunshine, we’re often unprepared for it and end up suffering in the heat.

While many of us will reach for fans and parasols to avoid the sweltering temperatures, one of the most divisive topics when it comes to keeping cool concerns windows. One expert from window company Plan-It Windows has suggested it can actually be better to keep windows closed while the weather is boiling, to keep conditions more manageable indoors.

Danny Stalman said: "During warmer weather, the natural inclination might be to open the windows and let the breeze in. However, we recommend keeping your windows shut if they face the sun directly. This helps maintain cooler indoor temperatures by blocking out the heat, making your living space more comfortable.

"If you're struggling with heat build-up, avoid opening your windows during the hottest part of the day. Instead, wait for the temperature to drop in the evening or early morning before airing out your house. This prevents hot air from entering and helps cool your space more effectively.”

Danny said that many people don't realise that the material of their windows can also affect indoor temperature control, with double-glazed windows better at insulating against heat than single-glazed options. He also said that the decision to open or close your windows should depend on the direction they face.

If you have south-facing windows, you should keep them, along with your curtains or blinds, closed throughout the day to block the entry of hot air. Danny added: “Once it cools down, open windows that aren't in direct sunlight.

“This helps keep warm air from coming in. Place fans across from these windows to help push out warm air. For an even cooler breeze, dampen some towels, chill them in the fridge, and place them near the fans.
