President Joe Biden is set to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with his family at Camp David on Sunday, following a challenging week that included a poor performance in a presidential debate against Donald Trump.

This retreat, planned prior to Thursday's debate, will serve as a break from the campaign trail and an opportunity for Biden to consult with his children and grandchildren, according to reports.

During the debate, Biden struggled with his words and lost his train of thought multiple times, raising concerns among some Democrats about his viability as a candidate.

Despite these concerns, Biden's campaign team remains resolute. They argue that any suggestion of him dropping out would result in "weeks of chaos" and could potentially hand victory to Trump.

Rob Flaherty, Biden's deputy campaign manager, expressed strong opposition to the idea of Biden withdrawing from the race.

"Joe Biden is going to be the Democratic nominee, period.

“End of story. Voters voted. He won overwhelmingly," Flaherty said in an email.

He warned that Biden dropping out would lead to internal conflict within the party and leave the Democratic nominee in a weakened position heading into the general election. Biden's trip to Camp David comes amid increasing pressure from various quarters.

At a recent high-profile fundraiser in the Hamptons, a plane bearing a banner reading "BI-DONE!" flew overhead, reflecting the sentiments of some attendees. Republican rival Donald Trump himself took to social media to highlight the incident.

Several media outlets, including The New York Times and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, have published editorials suggesting that Biden should consider stepping aside in favour of a younger candidate.

Additionally, some of Biden's aides have privately expressed concerns about his ability to continue, with one adviser describing the situation as "an utter f***ing disaster that has to be addressed."

Despite these concerns, top Democratic leaders have publicly reaffirmed their support for Biden.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi's spokesperson, Ian Krager, said: ”Speaker Pelosi has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025."

Similarly, spokespeople for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn also voiced their unwavering support for Biden and the Biden-Harris ticket.

Insiders suggest that First Lady Jill Biden holds significant influence over the president's decisions.

As Biden mulls his next steps at Camp David, it is believed that his wife's opinion will be crucial.

Another source added: "The decision-makers are two people — it's the president and his wife."

While the Democratic National Committee has procedures in place to choose a new candidate if necessary, Biden has the power to release the delegates he has accumulated and bow out of the race himself.

However, his team remains focused on weathering the current storm and moving forward with his campaign.
