Joe Biden's disastrous performance in last week's TV debate against Donald Trump cemented fears that the 81-year-old Democrat is too old to lead his country for a second four-year term.

One of Joe Biden's staunchest supporters in Congress has admitted the Democrat Party is thinking about ditching him as their presidential candidate, in a bitter blow for the US President.

The Democrats and their donors are panicking after the US President's disastrous performance in the first debate with Donald Trump last week.

Biden struggled to articulate his views and finish his sentences in the TV debate viewed by millions across the States.

His shocking performance cemented fears that the 81-year-old Democrat is too old to lead his country for a second four-year term.

Representative Jamie Raskin acknowledged "serious discussions" were taking place behind the scenes, as Democrats contemplate removing Biden from the Presidential ticket.

The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee admitted there was a "big problem" with Biden's performance but also said there was still "a tremendous reservoir of love" for their leader.

He continued: "We’re having a serious conversation about what to do. One thing I can tell you is that regardless of what President Biden decides, our party is going to be unified.

"And so whether he's the candidate or someone else is the candidate, he is going to be the keynote speaker at our convention, he will be the figure that we rally around to move forward and beat the forces of authoritarianism and reaction in the country."

Raskin has a been a loyal supporter of his President, vigorously defending him against the Republican's impeachment inquiry.

The President's family rallied to his support in the wake of mounting pressure for him to step aside for a younger candidate.

His family urged him not to quit the Presidential race and to "keep fighting", according to the NBC news channel.

His campaign said he had no plans to chuck in the towel and that he would be debating Trump again in September.

However, pressure is building for a change at the top, with an editorial in the New York Times calling on Biden to "serve his country" and drop out of the race.

Some donors also skipped Biden's $250,000-per-head Hamptons fundraiser at hedge fund manager Barry Rosenstein's 18-acre beach estate this weekend after his car-crash debate performance.

A poll of polls maintained by analysts FiveThirtyEight had the pair roughly neck and neck until the debate, but Donald Trump has since pulled ahead, if only by one percentage point. RealClearPolitics put Trump 1.9 percentage points in front.
