Screams were heard as a repeat of the London and Nice terror attacks – where vehicles were used to kill pedestrians - was feared and owners started to lock their doors for security.
Three pedestrians were injured but police who arrested the driver have now ruled out terrorism.
Kinga Gil, who was caught up in the horror just before midnight last night, said she had seconds to run for her life after seeing a car heading straight for her on the pavement.
She added: "As I was getting closer to my mum's car I see a car coming straight towards me crashing into the white and red gates and everything on its way.
“It was horrible and I had a matter of seconds to get out of the way.
"Honestly I am one of the luckiest people alive I got out this without a scratch. "I am in such a state of shock that I can’t even remember how I got back to my mum's car as I ran in a complete opposite way."
Three people were being treated by the North West Ambulance Service following the incident on Saturday at 11.50pm.
Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
