German MEP Elmar Brok said European Union member states would witness the negative effects Brexit would have on Britain which will encourage them to stay in the bloc.
Mr Brok, former chair of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee, said more EU citizens had already voiced they wanted to remain, including in Germany.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: “Britain’s a good example, they can understand what the damage could mean for them.
“Therefore, we have in all European countries after Brexit, a much higher percentage of people not wanting to leave the European Union.

“In Germany it increased to 80-85 per cent of the population, not to leave the EU after Brexit.

Mr Brok is a member of Ms Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union of Germany, which is part of the European People’s Party.
But billionaire Michael Bloomberg has admitted London will remain the financial capital of Europe despite branding Brexit ‘the stupidest thing any country has ever done’.
The former Mayor of New York repeated his claim that ‘Brexit isn’t smart’ but admitted London will remain Europe’s financial capital as a major Swiss bank admitted it is unlikely it will leave the capital.
Earlier this week Mr Bloomberg, who ran New York between 2002 and 2013, branded Brexit ‘the stupidest thing any country has ever done’, apart from the election of Donald Trump to the US presidency.
Mr Bloomberg, who is worth an estimated £40billion, admitted to the Times that financial centres have to be ‘family friendly and English-speaking’, meaning the City will continue to thrive.
