Beware the boom in rats
BRITAIN'S rodent population is booming because of the growing number of fortnightly bin collections, experts say.
Figures showing call-outs to deal with rats and mice up 44 per cent and 39 per cent over the past year “underestimate” the problem, claims The National Pest Technicians Association.
It predicts that without urgent action there would be a “growing threat to public health”.
In its report the NPTA said: “Poorly secured household waste is a further problem made worse where alternate weekly collections for entirely commendable waste minimisation purposes are not fully embraced or well enough managed by all concerned.”
Doretta Cocks, the founder of the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collection, said: “If waste has to be left out for two weeks or more, it will encourage rats.”
