VIOLENCE has broken out close to the Stadium of Light as football fans met ahead of the Sunderland clash with Celtic.

Despite the game being a pre-season friendly frustrated fans were arrested on the road to the Sunderland stadium.
Images of grown men battling with police officers have begun to emerge as the game kicks off inside.
Families and young fans were caught up in the chaos as they attempted to make their way towards the match.
Northumbria Police said one man has been taken to hospital with head injuries following a dispute at an off licence in Hendon.
Former EDL leader Tommy Robinson was at Fletcher's shop when the violence broke out.

A statement said: “Police are reminding all Sunderland and Celtic fans that any form of disorder, violence or nay behaviour that endangers the public will not be tolerated an police action will be taken.”
Northumberland Police confirmed there have been 19 arrests.

The game is supposed to be celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the Stadium of Light.
