Samantha Cameron ‘couldn’t afford designer clothes’ due to mortgage and childcare worries
FORMER Prime Minister David Cameron’s wife has revealed her money worries were so severe she was left unable to buy designer clothes.
Samantha Cameron was left unable to buy designer clothes, she revealed
Samantha Cameron, who set up womenswear brand Cefinn in July last year, said she was inspired to set up the label after mortgage and childcare payments stretched her budget after her husband left Downing Street.
Cefinn, which is more expensive than High Street brands but cheaper than designer labels, came out of a “very personal need”, according to Mrs Cameron, who has previously worked as a consultant and creative director for luxury goods manufacturer Smythson.

At the FoundHER Festival for Women entrepreneurs, she said: “I had been working in the luxury/fashion business for a long time and didn’t have disposable income, with childcare and mortgage etc, to buy designer clothes.
I wanted to find workwear and daywear that had a bit of a fashion edge
“But obviously, working in the fashion industry, I wanted to find workwear and daywear that had a bit of a fashion edge, that felt a bit cleaner, younger, more modern than what was available.
“So it was a feeling that there was a gap in the market.”

Mrs Cameron added that launching the label was “incredibly hard work”, revealing she endured sleepless nights and “answering emails at 4 o’clock in the morning”.
She also described the process as “lonely”, but added: “I feel like I’ve come out the other side, but that initial starting point was really hard.”
The Camerons reportedly took out a £3.5million mortgage on a new home following their departure from Downing Street almost a year ago.
But despite the loss of Mr Cameron’s £140,000 salary as Prime Minister, his tax return published in April last year revealed he had at least six sources of taxable income, including rental income from his £2million home in London’s Notting Hill.

And Mr Cameron also reportedly received £120,000 for an hour-long speech to Wall Street bankers in New York.
However, Mrs Cameron also disclosed she buys most of her husband’s clothes from High Street retailer Marks and Spencer.
