Leading heart surgeon is spared jail for sex assaults on patients
A WORLD-renowned heart surgeon who molested two women at separate hospitals was spared jail today.
Mohamed was given a six-month jail sentence, suspended for a year for molesting women
But Mohamed Amrani’s career hangs in the balance because he faces the possibility of being struck off.
Amrani, 54, twice groped a woman’s breasts at Harefield Hospital, north-west London, in 2003.
Jurors at the Old Bailey heard how he slapped another victim’s bottom at the private Cromwell Hospital, west London, 11 years later.
He denied the charges but was found guilty in April.
Today Judge Anne Molyneux handed him a six-month jail sentence, suspended for a year.
Mohamed groped a woman's breasts at a hospital in 2003 and slapped another victim's bottom in 2014
The attacks on the two women were “workplace bullying of a sexual nature”, the judge said.
She told the surgeon: “You are an outstandingly good heart surgeon. You have saved lives, you have enhanced lives. In my view, this was an abuse of power arising from the trust placed in you by the hospital.”
Mr Amrani denied the accusations but was found guilty for the assault in April
Amrani, of Harrow, northwest London, was cleared of sexually assaulting three other women in April.
He will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years and must carry out 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
In 2003, Moroccoborn Amrani carried out the UK’s first heart bypass operation on a conscious patient.
