Top heart surgeon ‘in sex attacks on five women at hospitals,’ court hears
A LEADING heart surgeon raped a woman in a hospital and groped four more believing they would never dare complain, a court heard today.
Surgeon Mohamed Amrani has been accused of raping a woman and groping four others
World-renowned doctor Mohamed Amrani waged a campaign of “sexual bullying” at Harefield hospital in north-west London, jurors were told.
He attacked one woman in his office, swearing at her and ignoring her cry of “No, please don’t!” before pushing her down on a sofa and forcing her to “perform a sexual act which amounts to rape”, the Old Bailey heard.
“Consent didn’t enter into it,” said Peter Clement, prosecuting.
“He couldn’t care less about her wishes.
“He cared only about himself.”
The alleged attack ended only when the surgeon answered a call on his mobile phone. Amrani, 53, grabbed the breasts of three other alleged victims at the hospital, where his wife worked part-time, and touched them between the legs, it was claimed.
Mohamed Amrani denies rape, indecent assault and sexual assault
The doctor, of Harrow, north-west London, denies rape, indecent assault and sexual assault.
He couldn’t care less about her wishes. He cared only about himself
Mr Clement described Amrani as “a leading heart and transplant surgeon of well-deserved renown”.
As a pioneering surgeon, he performed Britain’s first double valve replacement using keyhole surgery in 2007.
He has carried out many life-saving operations during his career.
“Mohamed Amrani was held in the highest regard by those who worked with him,” said Mr Clement.
“But there was another side to him.”
Mr Clement said “his position conferred a high degree of authority, power and trust” which made him “confident that those who he assaulted would not dare to make a formal complaint”.
The world-renowned doctor allegedly conducted a campaign of 'sexual bullying' at Harefield hospital
He was allegedly finally reported after he patted the bottom of his fifth victim at Cromwell private hospital in South Kensington, west London, in June 2014, and she responded by trying to slap him.
The alleged rape victim eventually made a formal complaint in February, 2015, 17 months after she said she had been attacked, jurors were told.
The trial continues.
