The primary school pupil's body was found by police at 4.30pm in a field behind a row of houses on Alness Drive, in Woodthorpe, on Monday but Katie died shortly after.
Police have now confirmed a 15-year-old girl has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
Tragically, Katie had been a bridesmaid at her parents’ wedding just a few weeks before her death.
Horrified residents claim Katie’s mum Alison fell to her knees after finding out about her daughter's death and screamed: “No, no, my little girl."
The 15-year-old suspect is now being quizzed by detective and will appear at York Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
According to a neighbour, whose partner works at York District Hospital, Katie was allegedly “stabbed twice”.

The neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told The Sun: “My partner was told by the nurse that treated her that she was stabbed twice.”
The woman added: “It’s really sad and not something you expect around here because it is a nice area.”
A distraught relative said: “Katie was a lovely bonny little girl. The family is all together. We just can’t believe what has happened.”
Earlier today, the girl’s grandparents left a heart-wrenching note among floral tributes, saying: “Night night my darling Princess Katie love nana and grandad xx”
