AN 'EMPTY police car' ended up on its roof after witnesses spotted it being chased by an officer.
Confused residents saw the overturned vehichle outside a house in Barnsley, South Yorkshire today after a crash at 1pm.
A member of the public said he saw an "empty police car" travelling down the hill before hitting a lamp post and flipping over.
He looked really shocked. The car didn't have a driver in and no one was hurt
It was being chased down the street by a policeman who appeared moments later.
It is believed the handbrake on the £15,000 Vauxhall Astra had snapped or was not put on properly.
Other police vehicles then came to the rescue where they installed a cordon as they looked into it.
A man in his 30s, who lives in the street, said: "Moments after it crashed into the post - I saw a police officer frantically running after it.
"He looked really shocked. The car didn't have a driver in and no one was hurt - but it could have been much worse."
It is thought the car rolled down the hill before colliding with the curb and telegraph police which made it flip onto its back.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A police car has overturned in Carlton Road today.
"At about 11.20am, it is reported that the car travelled a short distance down Carlton Road before colliding with a telegraph pole and overturning.
"No one was in the car, a Vauxhall Astra, and no one was injured as a result of the incident.
"An investigation is now underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident."
