Biggest cities in UK are backing HS2
HS2 WILL help unlock growth in the largest cities outside London, according to civic leaders who are demanding the Government press ahead with the flagship scheme.
Big cities back the HS2
Leaders from the 10 largest cities have urged party leaders to ensure the “maximum possible support” for the rail project ahead of the third reading of the Bill on Wednesday.
In an open letter, representatives of Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, Nottingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow wrote: “The Core Cities believe that increasing capacity on the rail network is critical to our economic future and we cannot go on relying on our Victorian network of routes alone.

“There is an important relationship between growth, jobs and HS2. If our cities perform better our nation will perform better.”
Labour backs the scheme but there are rebels in both main parties.
Former public prosecutor Sir Keir Starmer may have to resign his shadow home office brief if he votes against the £56billion scheme.
