The £11k speeding ticket: Driver is landed with huge bill after being clocked at 101 mph
A WEALTHY businessman convicted of speeding was landed with an astronomical court bill of £11,000.
The reckless driver was clocked at 101mph by a speed camera on the A55
David Pickup, 45, a company managing director from Wilmslow, Cheshire, was travelling to his holiday home in Abersoch, North Wales, in his £75,000 Audi R8 sports car when he was clocked at 101mph.
Flintshire magistrates court at Mold heard how a police car filmed the speeding Audi as it drove along the A55 in April last year.
The prosecution alleged that during a discussion with officers, Pickup asked them, “Can we call it 98?”
He denied breaking the 70mph limit and said a number of people from Cheshire had second homes in Abersoch and that a number of Audi R8 vehicles regularly used the A55.
A defence expert also questioned the accuracy of a speed camera.
But Pickup was found guilty. He was fined £675 and given six penalty points.
Magistrates awarded the full prosecution costs of £10,384, which included equipment testing.
