A horrified woman found a rat's head in a bag of spinach
Terri Powis was defrosting the 98p bag of Asda's own-brand greens in a steamer to prepare a chicken dinner for her 60-year-old mother when she made the gruesome discovery.
The 33-year-old spotted the severed head emerging from a clump of spinach as it began to defrost - but didn't realise what the find was until she examined it closely.
Ms Powis, an accounts assistant from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, then noticed the rat's snout and teeth and realised just what the piece of flesh was.
Ms Powis said: "It didn't even cross my mind that it was the head of a rat.
"I was poking around with it because I didn't know what it was.
The rat's head was complete with whiskers and teeth
t was a bit squashed but intact and must have been frozen soon after being severed
"I was gobsmacked when I realised what it was - it was horrible.
"It was very fresh and really pink.
"It was a bit squashed but intact and must have been frozen soon after being severed."
Ms Powis was revolted at the find
Ms Powis, who purchased the spinach from her local Asda in High Wycombe, telephoned the supermarket to complain.
Although she received an apology for the incident, which took place on January 19, she does not believe Asda took the complaint seriously.
She added: "The way they handled it was like it happened every day. They said sorry but it was just a 'yeah, bring it back to the store'.
"I felt it should have been dealt with more seriously."
An Asda spokesperson said: "We'd like to apologise for any upset caused to Ms Powis, and we will work closely with the local authorities whilst they conduct their investigation."
