MOUNTAINOUS waves batter Britain’s coast yesterday as the country braces itself for another wintry blast.
Our photograph shows the lighthouse at Seaham Harbour, Co Durham, dwarfed by huge columns of water as raging seas crash against the coast.
Meanwhile, parts of Britain could see an inch of snow today and freezing conditions will make driving hazardous.
The Met Office has severe weather warnings in place on the East Coast and in Western Scotland. And things are due to get worse. Heavy snow is forecast for the weekend and early next week, with several inches falling in hours on higher ground.
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “Another front is likely to sweep in on Sunday and into Monday with significant snow likely.

“Up to eight inches is possible in some regions. This could be the picture into the week. Cold weather is likely to last into the middle of February.”
The Met Office has a level 2 cold weather alert in place. It warned that the extreme temperatures could pose a risk to elderly and vulnerable people.
Britain has been hit by 70mph winds for a week after Arctic weather swept in from Northern Europe.
