New Bank of England boss Mark Carney is a Canadian
THE Bank of England is to get a foreign-born governor for the first time in its 318-year history, the Chancellor said yesterday.
Canadian banking chief Mark Carney will take over from current governor Sir Mervyn King in June next year. MPs gasped at the surprise choice when the Chancellor announced it in the Commons.
Mr Carney, 47, who will get a £600,000 salary, is currently governor of the Bank of Canada and chairman of the global Financial Stability Board.
Mr Osborne said he was “the outstanding central banker of his generation with unparalleled expertise in financial regulation”.
