As rat season sees infestations increase across the UK, one expert has given his advice on how to banish the pest for good.

Spotting a rat on your property is some people’s idea of a nightmare. However as rats tend to breed between March and October that means they are at their most active between September and November - so a few shocks for homeowners could be on the cards.

During these so-called active periods, rats like to infest homes, garages and sheds as they search for food to stockpile for the winter - many choosing to dine on household waste.

Waste expert Paul Jackson, from NRC Business Waste, is on hand to explain how properly managing your bins can keep the pests away - and we reveal his top tips on the topic below.

Rat attraction

Put a lid on it is Paul’s first piece on advice. The waste expert said: "Rats are attracted to warmth, food, and shelter, and your bin store often provides these essentials.

“Securing bin lids and avoiding moist areas can significantly reduce the risk of rat infestations."

Playing detective

Making sure you spot them early is another tip from Paul. He said: "Look out for signs like partially nibbled food, holes in packaging, small droppings, nests, tracks, and a distinct musky odour.

“Identification early on helps in swift and effective prevention."

Bin matters

Get to grips with bin cleanliness is top of Paul’s list to deter rats - as well as making sure they’re not broken and placing them in the correct area. He said: "Proper bin maintenance is a simple yet effective way to deter rats.

“Regularly cleaning bins, securing lids, and promptly replacing broken bins not only keeps rats at bay but also ensures proper waste containment and hygiene."

He added: "Strategic bin placement matters. Avoid locations near heat sources and direct sunlight to minimise smells and decomposition. Keeping bins secured in the bin store until collection day also reduces the chances of attracting nocturnal rats."

Composting aware

While some things can be great for your garden, they can be tempting to little critters. Paul said: "Compost heaps, while great for gardening, can attract rats.

“Keep these separate from your bin store and be mindful of their placement. This ensures that your waste management efforts don't unintentionally invite unwanted pests."

Know the risks

Rats are unpleasant for many reasons - and health risks are certainly on the list.

Paul said: "Rats carry diseases like Leptospirosis, which can lead to serious health issues. It’s important to address rat infestations promptly to prevent the spread of diseases through contaminated surfaces."
