Ann Widdecombe's fury at gay marriages
ANN Widdecombe led a spirited Tory backlash against gay marriage yesterday.
The Daily Express columnist attacked David Cameron’s plans for same-sex weddings, accusing him of discarding the basic freedom of people to disagree with the idea.
The Prime Minister is expected to reaffirm his commitment to legislate to allow gay marriage in his headline speech at the Conservative Party conference tomorrow.
Speaking in Birmingham, Ms Widdecombe claimed Christian teachers could be sacked as a result.
She said: “The real bigots are those who believe that those who dissent have no right to do so, and that the state itself should silence them.”
A string of senior Tories, including Home Secretary Theresa May, are in favour of reform.
