Pressure grows on Julian Assange
BRITAIN cranked up the pressure on Ecuador yesterday to resume talks over WikiLeaks fugitive Julian Assange.
The Foreign Office confirmed a “formal communication” had gone to diplomats from the South American country, which granted the Australian political asylum last week.
Assange, 41, is wanted in Sweden over claims of sexual assault but is refusing to travel there amid fears he will be extradited to the US over his website leaks.
He remains holed up in the Ecuador Embassy in London. An official there said Britain must withdraw a threat to “storm” it – a threat denied by Foreign Secretary William Hague.
