Downton Abbey brings upturn
VISITORS expected to flock to the castle where the hit TV series Downton Abbey is filmed may have their tea delayed – by bats.
Lord Carnarvon has applied for permission to convert a former stables and garage, where the show is filmed at Highclere Castle, near Newbury, Berkshire, into tea rooms, but experts have told Basingstoke council that pipistrelle bats roost in the old stables and a Natural England Licence must be obtained before any work can be carried out.
Lady Carnarvon explained: “We need more space for people to sit. We just want to improve the facilities.”
The council plans to give its decision next month.
