Hollywood great Sidney Lumet dies
SIDNEY Lumet, one of Hollywood’s greatest crime directors, died last night at the age of 86.
He won four Academy Awards as Best Director and an honorary Oscar in 2005 in a career of more than 50 films, including 12 Angry Men, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, and The Verdict.
Lumet once said: “I’m thrilled by the idea that I’m not even sure how many films I’ve done.”
He sealed his reputation as an “actor’s director”, gaining masterful performances from stars including Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, Sean Connery, Albert Finney, Ingrid Bergman and Al Pacino.
Relatives said he died of lymphoma at his home in Manhattan, New York.
