Morrisons to close 100 stores in 2026 as 7 stores named - full list

Morrisons is closing 100 branches in the coming months, with loss-making convenience shops among those affected. The retail giant announced in May that Morrisons Daily outlets, which became part of the group through its acquisition of McColls, were to shut.

Cost increases triggered by government policies were blamed by Morrisons for the closures, including rises in the National Living Wage and employee National Insurance contributions. Hundreds of jobs have been put at risk, with a consultation on the closures still underway.

The Government said at the time that it was a commercial decision for Morrisons to shut shops, but ministers understood it was a "concerning time" for staff and their families.

Morrisons has said previously that the "tough" decision to close Morrisons Daily shops would put more staff at risk of redundancy, but the business would try and find roles for those affected.

There are about 1,700 Morrisons Daily convenience stores in the UK, according to the BBC. At the time of the announcement, Morrisons did not publish details of all the branches set to close.

But it did confirm seven branches faced the chop. These are: Fairfax Avenue, Hull; Esk Close, Guisborough; Zetland Road, Loftus; Stokesley High Street, Middlesbrough; Queen Street, Redcar; Middle Street, South Driffield and Woodthorpe in York.

Earlier this month, Morrisons revealed a slowdown in sales growth for the latest quarter in the face of “highly competitive” market conditions.

The supermarket group revealed total sales grew by 1.7% to £4billion over the 13 weeks to April 26. This compares with a 2.6% increase in the previous quarter. Like-for-like sales growth slowed to 2.2% from 2.8% in the previous quarter.

Despite the numbers, Morrisons boss Rami Baitieh said he was “pleased” by the latest performance and highlighted an “encouraging start” to the third quarter, with hopes that sales will be boosted by the World Cup and Father’s Day.

Morrisons is now the sixth largest supermarket in the UK after seeing a dip in its share of the grocery market in recent years.

The retailer has set itself a target to save £1billion as part of a long term strategy to change its fortunes. Over the last quarter, Morrisons said it secured £48million of cost savings.

Shutting about 100 lossmaking convenience stores is part of the effort to cut costs. While closures have been announced, the retailer said it still opened 30 new Morrisons Daily franchise stores in the quarter and plans to open hundreds more in the years ahead.

Mr Baitieh said previously: "In a highly competitive market, we’re focusing hard on delivering the best value for customers to give them more reasons to shop at Morrisons."
