Traffic on the M25 stopped on Wednesday after a serious collision. National Highways said yesterday: "Traffic is being held on the #M25 clockwise at J6 #Godstone due to a serious collision. Emergency services are on scene. There are delays in excess of 60 minutes and 6 miles of congestion on the approach."

All lanes remained closed into the evening and night of Wednesday, only reopening in the early hours of Thursday. Traffic eased overnight, and it returned to normal levels during rush hour this morning, June 25.

Traffic resumes to normal levels

Traffic has now resumed to normal levels on the M25 between junctions 6 and 7.

Crash reported on Tonbridge Bypass

A crash between two cars has been reported on A21 Tonbridge Bypass.

There is queueing traffic for four miles and one lane is closed.

Severe delays persist

Severe delays persist on the M25 around J6.

The AA is reporting severe delays of 19 minutes and delays increasing on M25 clockwise between J5 M26 J5 and J6 A22.

There is congestion to J5 M26. Towards J6 (Godstone).

What happened?

A serious collision took place on the M25 between J6 and J7 after a collison between a white Mercedes Vito van and a white lorry shortly before 10am yesterday, June 24.

The driver of the van suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital via air ambulance.

The incident sparked massive delays on the M25.

M25 update for anticlockwise direction

As per National Highways:"All lanes REOPENED on the #M25 anticlockwise between J26 (#M11) and J25 (#WalthamCross) following emergency repairs.

Delays currently 60 mins and five miles of congestion on the approach."

M25 reopens

A spokesperson has confirmed the M25 has reopened, along with access to the M26 via a social media statement on X, formerly Twitter.

"The M25 clockwise between J5 and J6 has now reopened along with the M26 and access to the M26 from the M20.

"However the M25 clockwise at J6 between the entry and exit slip roads remains closed for ongoing resurfacing works."

The spokesperson added: "There are no delays on the approach to J6."

Emergency overnight resurfacing

Emergency overnight resurfacing is required due to the crash, which resulted in a large spillage and extensive damage.

Update on crash clearance

The event is expected to clear between 2.45am and 3am, according to National Highways. This could continue to be pushed back as the road requires resurfacing.

National Highways is reporting that the event is expected to clear between 12.45am and 1am, with normal traffic conditions resuming around this time also.

At M25 J5 follow onto A21 and then take the second A25 exit towards Westerham.

Follow A25 through Sundridge, Brasted, Westerham, Limpsfield and Oxted.

Continue along A25 towards Godstone to A25 / A22 roundabout.

Take 3rd exit onto A22 towards London to M25 Junction 6

At J6 roundabout take the 2nd exit and rejoin M25 towards Gatwick.

Road users that intending to use the M26 to the M25 are advised to follow the below diversion route.

Continue on the M20 to J1 and then join the M25 at J3 heading clockwise.

Continue on the M25 to J5.

Five miles of congestion

There are now five miles of congestion on the approach to the incident, though one lane should be opening soon to help release trapped traffic.

Police appeal for witnesses

Surrey Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a serious collision on the clockwise carriageway of the M25 between Junctions 6 and 7, near Bletchingley, shortly before 10am today (Wednesday 24 June).

"The collision involved a white Mercedes Vito van and a white lorry. The driver of the van, a man in his 30s, sustained serious injuries and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital by air ambulance."

The force urged anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam or helmet-cam footage that may have captured all or part of the incident to come forward, quoting PR/45260075072.

When will the crash clear?

National Highways says the incident is expected to clear between 9pm and 9.15pm, with resurfacing work also required.

Resurfacing required after fuel spillage

Contractors are currently dealing with a large spillage, which National Highways said requires a section of the road to be resurfaced.

National Highways said police have now completed their investigation at the scene of the crash.

Man airlifted to hospital

An ambulance service spokesperson said: "South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) was called at approximately 10:00 this morning (24/06/26) following reports of an RTC on the M25 between Junctions 5 and 6 near to Godstone.

"Multiple crews attended and were joined at the scene by the Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex. A male patient was treated at the scene for a leg injury, before being airlifted to St George's Hospital in London for further medical treatment."

M25 and M26 closed

The M25 is closed clockwise between J5 Chevening Interchange (Sevenoaks, Hastings A21) and J6 Godstone Interchange.

The M26 westbound is also closed between J3 of the M20 and the M25.

When is the motorway likely to open?

The National Highways said there is no current estimated time for the reopening of the motorway. The M25 remains closed at the moment. 

4 miles of congestion

The M25 clockwise remains closed within J6 Godstone due to a serious collision. Police are currently completing investigations on scene. Trapped traffic is being released via the J6 exit slip.

There is no ETA for reopening. and there are 4 miles of congestion in the area. Drivers have been told to plan ahead.

Upset commuters urge everyone 'to avoid' M25

Commuters stuck on the M25 have shared photos and videos from the spot as they urge people on social media to "avoid" the motorway.

One of the users wrote: "M25 junction 6 ….. avoid."

Another user commented: "It’s finally happened, first flight missed in 50 years, horrific crash on the M25, closed both ways, air ambulance in attendance, no point stressing, some poor soul might not be going home today."

A third user commented: "Horrible accident on the M25 clockwise at Junction 6.

"That’s going to take a lot of cleaning up, can’t see that opening any time soon, already miles upon miles of stationary traffic leading up to it as everybody has to come up at that junction."

The M25 motorway is closed both clockwise and anti-clockwise causing more troubles for the commuters.

'Multiple vehicles' involved

According to AA, 'multiple vehicles' have been involved in the incident.

It said: Road closed and long delays due to serious crash, multiple vehicles and the central reservation involved on M25 clockwise before J6 A22 (Godstone). Camera confirm emergency services in lanes two and three (of three) on the Anti Clockwise carriageway."
