M60 traffic RECAP: Lanes closed near Pendlebury and and Whitefield after car fire

Traffic on the M60 motorway is building after a car fire as highway cameras show long queues building near Whitefield.

Pictures from the scene show a vehicle engulfed in flames near the Whitefield exit this morning (Monday, May 11). Two lanes on the clockwise carriageway of the motorway have been closed between junction 16 for Pendlebury and junction 17 for Prestwich and Whitefield.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix reports that traffic is “very slow” approaching the incident, while motorway cameras show queues continuing to build.

An accident has ALSO been reported on the nearby M61. The northbound side is partially blocked junction 3 to junction 4.

Recap

-Two lanes closed on the M60 clockwise between J16 Pendlebury and J17 Prestwich/Whitefield after a car fire

-Pictures showed a vehicle engulfed in flames on the hard shoulder near Whitefield

-Queues stretched back to J14 as traffic built during the morning rush hour

-Congestion was heaviest clockwise, with traffic described as “very slow”

-Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines to the scene shortly after 6.35am

-Firefighters used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze

-Crews remained at the scene for around an hour before making the area safe

-Lane closures were gradually reduced before all lanes reopened by around 7.40am

-Heavy congestion continued even after the motorway fully reopened

-Traffic had eased significantly by around 9.20am

Fire service statement

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: 

“Shortly after 6.35am on Monday 11 May, three fire engines from Broughton, Agecroft and Whitefield fire stations were called to attend a car fire on the M60  clockwise between junctions 16 and 17.

 “Crews arrive quickly and used two hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

 “Firefighters made the area safe before departing after approximately one hour at the scene.”

An accident has been reported on the nearby M61.

The northbound side is partially blocked junction 3 to junction 4.

All lanes re-opened as congestion remains

All lanes between J16 and J17 have now re-opened however heavy congestion remains, particularly in the clockwise direction.

Down to one lane closed

The closure is now down to one lane on the M60 clockwise from junction 16 for Pendlebury to junction 17 for Prestwich and Whitefield.

Location

Two lanes were shut off on the clockwise side of the motorway between junction 16 for Pendlebury and junction 17 for Prestwich and Whitefield.

Queues are stretching from the junction at Whitefield back to junction 14.

Conestion continues to build on the M60 clockwise.
