UK football giant making major new change to iconic stadium - built in 1899

Work is already underway, with upgrades set to enhance key areas of the over 50,000-seat stadium.

Rangers have begun a major programme of upgrades at their historic Ibrox Stadium as the Scottish football giants prepare for the new season. The famous Glasgow ground, which opened in 1899, is undergoing a series of improvements spanning multiple stands and supporter areas, with club officials aiming to modernise facilities while preserving the stadium's heritage.

Work is already under way on the playing surface, which is being renovated ahead of the upcoming 2026/27 season. One of the most noticeable changes for supporters will come in the Copland Rear Stand, where existing balustrades are being replaced with glass panels to improve sightlines of the pitch. Earlier this year, supporters' group Club 1872 pledged a six-figure investment through its Ibrox Heritage Fund to help finance restoration projects aimed at preserving key features of the historic stadium.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to protect and enhance Ibrox's architectural legacy while ensuring the ground remains fit for modern football.

According to reports, the club's trophy room is set to receive a significant refresh, while structural work and façade restoration are also planned for the Bill Struth Main Stand. Improvements are additionally being made to hospitality areas and supporter facilities throughout the ground, including refurbishing the Members Lounge with new seating, LED lighting, flooring and decorative improvements.

The John Greig Ibrox disaster memorial statue - honouring the 66 supporters who lost their lives at the stadium in 1971 - is set to be restored and rewaxed.

Built in 1899, Ibrox has been the home of Rangers throughout the club's rise into one of Britain's most successful football institutions.

The famous Glasgow stadium has witnessed the club win dozens of league titles, celebrated domestic trebles and hosted memorable European occasions, including Rangers' run to the 2008 UEFA Cup final and the 2022 Europa League final campaign.

The Glasgow stadium currently holds around 51,700 supporters, making it one of the largest football grounds in the UK. Ibrox has been significantly redeveloped over the past century but remains a traditional four-stand arena, with the iconic Bill Struth Main Stand among the most recognisable structures in British football.
