George Osborne leaves pensioners out of cuts
GEORGE Osborne has defended his decision not to touch benefits for pensioners in his £81billion debt-slashing review.
Writing exclusively for the Sunday Express, the Chancellor today praises the contribution made to Britain by the elderly.
He said: “One group I was very keen to support is our pensioners because they have worked long and hard all their lives and deserve a life of dignity in retirement.
“So we will provide free eye tests, free prescription charges, free bus passes, free TV licences and standard winter fuel payments.”
Mr Osborne said his Spending Review had been full of “difficult choices”, forcing a priority of spending on education, support for the elderly, security and helping British business grow.
“The decisions we have taken are tough but fair,” he said.
“They will ensure that our children are not left paying off the debts we ourselves were not prepared to pay.
“A stronger Britain starts this week.”
