Swansea fire RECAP: Huge fire drifts over major UK motorway as black smoke fills sky

Firefighters rushed to Swansea after a massive fire broke out in the city.

A massive plume of black smoke could be seen from miles away, rising from Swansea Road near Penllergaer and Gorseinon.

The thick smoke billowed into the air above the M4, and forced a nearby road to be partially shut off. 

Five fire engines were spotted rushing to the area as well as a specialist appliances after they were alerted of the blaze at around 2.10pm, WalesOnline reported. Police also arrived at the scene.  

While experts worked to tackle the incident, residents were advised to remain indoors.

Fire now under control

Onlookers say the smoke that had billowed above Swansea Road is no longer visible as the flames are brought under control.

Police release statement

They said: "Officers were called to Swansea Road, Gorseinon at 2:15pm this afternoon (Thursday, August 29) following a report of a fire. A number of campervans and other vehicles have sustained fire damage.

"A 25-year-old man has received attention from paramedics but has sustained no serious injuries.

"Officers have assisted the Fire Service with traffic management in the surrounding area. A section of Swansea Road has been closed to through traffic. Buildings in the vicinity of the fire have been evacuated as a precaution."

Fire service tells locals to stay indoors

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “Several of our crews are currently attending an incident along Swansea Road in Gorseinon. Local residents are advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area if possible and find alternative routes for your journey.”

Fire service: Incident is ongoing

Mid and West Fire and Rescue Service said: "We can confirm that seven Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews are currently in attendance at Day’s Motorpark in Gorseinon. The incident is currently ongoing."

Swansea Road partly closed

Traffic traffic monitoring service Inrix reports: “Swansea Road in both directions closed, slow traffic due to building fire between the A484 and the Garngoch Hospital turn off.”
