A1(M) traffic: UK motorway chaos after 'serious' crash shuts road in both directions

A huge crash on the A1(M) in West Yorkshire has resulted in emergency services closing the road in both directions.

Police and ambulance crews, including an air ambulance, are at the scene on the major UK motorway between Junctions 40 and 41 after the incident on Thursday afternoon.

A post on the National Highways website reads: "The A1M in West Yorkshire is closed in both directions between J41 (M62) and J40 (Darrington/Ferrybridge) due to a serious collision.

"All Emergency services including West Yorkshire Police and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

"Due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to be closed throughout the afternoon."

A1(M) southbound traffic expected to resume normally well into evening

National Highways's latest traffic notice for the A1 motorway warns motorists that the disruption is expected to last well past rush hour.

Current notices on Traffic England read: "The event is expected to clear between 21:30 and 21:45 on 29 August 2024."

A1(M) southbound remains closed

The A1 motorway's southbound carriage remains shut after a three-car collision earlier this afternoon.

The northbound carriageway was reopened at 2:45 pm.

National Highways said that "due to the nature of the incident, the road is expected to be closed throughout the afternoon."

A1(M) northbound carriageway reopens

National Highways has confirmed the northbound carriageway of the A1 motorway between J41 and J40 is now open again.

In their latest update on the situation, they said: "The #A1M in #WestYorkshire remains closed southbound between J41 (#M62) & J40 (#Ferrybridge) following a serious multi-vehicle collision.

"The northbound carriageway has re-opened."

Three 'seriously injured' after A1(M) three-car collision

West Yorkshire Police confirmed three people were seriously injured in the car crash that forced the closure of A1(M) between Junction 41 and Junction 40.

In a statement, the force said officers remain on scene and that traffic is likely to be disrupted "for some time."

They said: "Police are at the scene of a serious collision on the A1 near Ferrybridge and are warning motorists to seek alternative routes at this time.

"It was reported at 12:36pm that a three vehicle collision had occurred on the A1 southbound near J41.

"The A1 southbound has been closed between J41 (M62) and J40 (Ferrybridge) and is expected to be closed for some time. The northbound carriageway is also currently closed."

They added: "Three people are reported to have sustained serious injuries. A number of others were also reported to be walking wounded."

Southbound motorists are being diverted via the solid square diversion symbol:

- Exit the A1M at J41 and proceed onto the M62 eastbound for approx. 2 miles

- Exit the M62 at J33 and at the roundabout, proceed onto the A1 southboundRe-join the A1M

Photos from traffic cams overlooking the busy motorway have shown long queues forming as National Highways warned disruption is likely to last well into the afternoon.

Diversion routes in operation as A1(M) shut down

National Highways confirmed that diversion routes are in operation as the A1 motorway remains closed in both directions.

Traffic is shut down between Junction 41 and Junction 40 at Ferrybridge.

Details on the routes will be released shortly.
