An unlikely city on the south coast is home to more pubs than anywhere else in the country.

Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy and birthplace of Charles Dickens, is a seaside city near Bournemouth and Southampton with a population of 208,000.

The seaside city has 12 pubs per square mile, according to research from Liberty Games, almost double the pubs per square mile than London. Coming in second was Liverpool with 11 per square mile and Bristol with 10.

The researchers from Liberty Games analysed 50,000 pubs to determine where they were based and where had the most.

The town’s pubs are as vibrant as they are varied with something for everyone - from authentic old haunts to gently lit boltholes with stunning views.

Some of those on offer in Portsmouth include the Dolphin, the Still and West, the Fleet, the Eastney Tavern, the Barley Mow, and the Bridge Tavern.

The area around Albert Road is home to many independent pubs, with lots run by nearby breweries. It is a large student area, however, so those wanting a quieter atmosphere could go instead to the spots in Old Portsmouth.

According to Tripadvisor ratings, the best pub in Portsmouth is the Brewhouse and Kitchen, with reviewers calling it a “fabulous venue” with attentive and knowledgeable staff.

Other things to visit in the city include the historic dockyard, HMS Victory, Spinnaker Tower, Portchester Castle and Clarence Pier.

In the nearby area are Fort Nelson, Farlington Marshes, the Explosion Museum and multiple pebble beaches such as Southsea and Eastney.

Portsmouth is accessible by train from London, Winchester and Guildford and by car via the M27. There are a number of hotels, B&Bs and more to stay at in the city.
