Construction on an incredible new £317m junction that will help reduce traffic chaos on the UK’s busiest motorway has reached a major landmark.

National Highways are currently working on a three year project along the M25 at junction 10 in Surrey to help reduce congestion with aims to ‘create a smoother flow of traffic'.

The project is due to be completed in summer 2025, and reached a key landmark in March with the demolition of Clearmount Bridge, the first of several demolitions scheduled to take place during 2024.

The works involved an unprecedented full weekend closure of the junction, and produced 3,000 tonnes of material, which took 80 trucks more than 24 hours to clear away.

And now construction has started on the new Clearmount footbridge.

The new steel structure will connect communities between Byfleet and Wisley Common, assembled offsite, and the trestles and steel beams supporting the footbridge were delivered to Buxton Wood, near the site, last week.

Engineers at Balfour Beatty have now started the complex assembly of the footbridge.

The incredible bridge will be suitable for cyclists and horse-riders as well as pedestrians, weighing in at over 130 tonnes once installed the bridge will be 61 metres long, 4.3 metres wide and 2.6 metres high.

More than 300,000 vehicles are expected to travel under the structure every day.

Between now and this autumn National Highways will be closing the M25 around junction 10 again to demolish three bridges and install three new ones, including the UK’s first heathland bridge, known as Cockrow Green Bridge, which will provide safe natural corridor for local wildlife between Ockham and Wisley Commons.

The M25 junction 10 and A3 Wisley interchange is the busiest section of the M25, this sheer volume of traffic means vehicles often start queuing northbound between Ockham Park roundabout and the M25 junction 10, on the junction 10 roundabout, and on the approach to the Painshill roundabout.
