Joel Dommett teases two big surprises at National Television Awards despite scandals

ITV viewers could be in for a shock as Joel Dommett hinted new shows could "overtake" firm favourites at the upcoming National Television Awards.

TM: Joel Dommett gets startled by 'fire alarm' sound

Joel Dommett will return to screens this week to host ITV’s hotly anticipated National Television Awards.

Ahead of the show, the presenter hinted there could be a few surprises in store despite the scandals which have embroiled many of the nominated shows.

Following the controversial firing of Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima, BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing received a nod for the Talent Show category.

Although bosses will be pleased if the show wins the award, which is voted for by the public, Joel speculated this may not be the case.

He told The Sun: “People want to know what we are projecting on telly is real and genuine.”

“When someone's at home watching This Morning, Strictly, whatever, they want to know that this character that they love on telly is the same person in the dressing room or in their house.

“And so when scandal rocks our industry in such a way, I think people start to mistrust.”

Despite this, Joel believes the long-running competition could escape thanks to its loyal fans.

He added: “However, shows like Strictly are so big and so it takes a lot to rock these things sometimes.”

The Repair Shop

This wasn’t the case for ITV’s This Morning after they missed out on the Daytime award last year, following the Phillip Schofield saga.

Instead, The Repair Shop won, ending the programme’s 13-year streak.

However, with Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard replacing Phil and Holly Willoughby, it is yet to be seen if the show will return to its top spot.

This year, they’re up against The Chase, Deal or No Deal, Loose Women and The Repair Shop.
