Southport: Police declare serious incident after reported stabbing

A child is reported to be the victim who has died in a horrific mass stabbing in Merseyside. At least eight people were stabbed with the attacker rampaging through a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.

The horrific attack unfolded at about 11.50am today (July 29) with Alder Hey Children's Hospital declaring a major incident, after victims were rushed there.

While eight casualties have been confirmed reporters at our sister-title, the Liverpool Echo, believe the total could rise as they understand more than 10 people were injured, while one child tragically died.

Local residents said they locked their doors and windows as the news began to spread of the incident, with many saying they felt "terrified" as loud sirens rang around the town.

At least 13 ambulances were sent to the Hope of Hart children's club, with pictures showing crowds of police and paramedics at the scene.

According to the Liverpool Echo, one parent "barricaded themselves and their children" in a bedroom in their home over fears about what was happening outside.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services are in Southport following a major incident this morning, Monday 29 July.

At around 11.50am, we were called to a property on Hart Street to reports of a stabbing. There are a number of reported casualties and more details will be confirmed when possible.

"Armed police have detained a male and seized a knife. He has been taken to a police station. Please avoid the area while we deal with this incident. There is no wider threat to the public."

Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, has also issued a response to the incident. On X, she said: "I am deeply concerned at the very serious incident in Southport. All my thoughts are with the families & loved ones of those affected.

"I have spoken to the Merseyside Police & Crime Commissioner to convey full support to the police & thanks to the emergency services responding."

Parents arriving in the area have recalled the horror moment some pupils fled the scene, with one father saying his daughter is safe because she ran from the building.

Alder Hey Hospital has issued a warning as more victims are brought into its care. A spokesman said: "The Trust is working with other emergency services to respond to this incident and our Emergency Department is currently extremely busy.

"We ask parents to only bring their children to the Emergency Department if it is urgent. All other appointments and services are running as normal."
