Since May 2016, passengers have been able to travel in first class for the price of a standard fare.
This is because on every Thameslink Class 700 train service, regardless of whether it is peak or off-peak, the rear first-class carriage is declassified, allowing standard ticket-holders to sit there.
This information is displayed on the passenger information panel on board, although many might not think to check it, reports MyLondon.
A Thameslink spokesperson previously told MyLondon: “Our modern Thameslink trains not only feature air conditioning and wide, walk-through carriages, but they also have the very latest passenger information systems.
"These automatically declassify some or all of the first class according to the route to suit passenger demand.
"The rear first class section on Thameslink is always declassified and on certain routes, for example around the Wimbledon and Sutton loop, we have never had first class so both front and back are declassified.”
The Thameslink network stretches from Bedford and Luton in the north to Brighton and Gatwick Airport in the south, passing through central London. Key stations include St Pancras International, London Bridge, Blackfriars, and Farringdon.
It offers a high-frequency service with up to 24 trains per hour passing through central London during peak times.
