A hairpin highway that has been dubbed the 'bendiest in Britain' attracts driving enthusiasts from all over the world who want to sample the mind-blowing bends.

Zig Zag Hill on the B3081 in Dorset rises steeply amid the beautiful English countryside close to the pretty town of Shaftesbury.

The area is dotted with small hills rising suddenly from the ancient landscape, including the famous Gold Hill in Shaftesbury which featured in the iconic Hovis bread adverts.

Anyone cycling with bread in their basket might have to take care on Zig Zag Hill however, as the stretch of road has two severe bends which force drivers to do an almost 180-degree turn.

In 2019, roadworks were carried out on the road as the bends had suffered severe deterioration requiring "deep excavation and resurfacing", according to the BBC.

As well as being very bendy, Zig Zag Hill as the name suggests is also on a grandient which in some places on the road reaches 13 percent.

This means larger vehicles, such as lorries or cars towing caravans, have to take extreme care on the route, keeping in low gear both for going up and perhaps more importantly for coming down.

Alpine roads in Europe are more famous for breathtaking bends and views but Zig Zag Hill is perhaps Britain's best and nearest comparison for the UK drivers.

In a survey by motoring experts LeaseCar.uk of the worst routes for drivers around the UK, Zig Zag Hill was named as 'resembling a roller coaster' and was described as the 'bendiest one mile stretch of road in the UK'.

A spokesman for LeaseCar.uk said: "We want motorists heading out on the road this summer to be well prepared and know what sort of roads they may be coming up against.

"These twisty roads are enough to incite fear in even the most experienced of drivers. Their sheer drops, sharp bends and uneven terrain should definitely be avoided where possible."
