An ice cream man has revealed his insider knowledge to inform people the way to tell a fake whippy ice cream from a real Mr Whippy.

Thanks to the sweltering hot weather, Brits across the country are rushing to the ice cream vans this week for a 99 Flake with red sauce (you want how much??) in a bid to keep cool.

But an ice cream van owner has revealed the secrets of the trade and warned people not to get ripped off by buying fake whippy loaded with cheap and nasty palm oil instead of cream - with some very easy telltale signs to spot.

Buying Ice Cream

Taking to Reddit, the ice cream van owner - who we’ve kept anonymous to protect him from icy reprisals - explained how to check if you’re getting the real thing from your ice cream van this summer.

He told users: “Know your whippy.

“As summer is here and some of you are happy to take on a new mortgage for an ice cream from one of those lovely vans.

“Are you being ripped off with horrible palm oil mix which is about £7.89 + VAT from Costco/Bookers or are you actually having an ice cream made from that second word and made from a mix that costs £12.48 + VAT from an actual ice cream supplier, how do you tell?

“Palm oil s***: It is as white as the driven snow, has no weight and a texture like soft styrofoam. The taste is meg and leaves a film on your tongue.

“Pure cream mix: It has a yellow tinge, you can feel the weight difference between the cone and the whippy. Texture like silk and no horrible film. Tastes like heavenly cream.”

Cost: Palm oil - I would never buy it but expect to spend £3+.

“Cream - I sell a medium for £2.50 with a flake, up to two sauces and a choice of sprinkles, marshmallows or honeycomb bits, but expect to spend upwards of £4 if it’s a stationary van.”

The man then added a genius way to check before buying, saying: “Literally look at someone else’s or ask for a taste and be honest. Mate is it cream or palm oil? Because I’m allergic to palm oil. Pure white - palm oil. Yellow creamy - cream.”

One response said: “That’s actually very useful. I will be sure to check my ice creams this summer.”
