A chemical incident has led police to issue a warning to residents to keep their windows and doors shut.

South Wales Police advised the precautionary measure after the incident at Dow Corning in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan. South Wales Fire and Rescue are at the scene.

People in the Sully and Penarth areas have been affected, according to the emergency services.

The police issued a warning on social media at 4pm on Saturday (June 15). It read: "Please be advised there has been a chemical leak at Dow Corning in Barry and residents in the Dinas Powys, Sully and Penarth areas are advised to close doors and windows as a precaution while the matter is being dealt with. Thank you for patience at this time."

South Wales Fire and Rescue issued a similarly worded warning online at 4.40pm.

About 10 minutes after South Wales Fire and Rescue issued its warning, the service gave the all clear.

It wrote on X: "Dow Corning, Barry, have now given an all clear. We would like to thank residents in the area for their cooperation".

Dow Corning is a Barry-based international chemical company which also has a site in Manchester. The plant in Barry is the biggest operation for silicone manufacturing outside of the USA, according to Wales Online.

Pictures from the scene in Barry show huge plumes of white smoke above the plant drifting eastwards towards the towns of Dinas Powyth and Penarth.

A spokesperson for the company said Dow Performance Silicones experienced a chemical release and in collaboration with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Barry residents were advised to close doors and windows as a precaution.

They said the cause of the release was quickly identified and contained, adding: "At 4.50pm the all clear signal was given and shared with the community. The Dow Emergency Management Team and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been stood down. There have been no resulting injuries on the site nor any reported to us in the community."

Dow said it will be investigating the cause of the release and identifying measures to prevent the type of incident happening again in the future.
