Huge queues had formed on the M6 following a crash between a lorry and a car causing serious delays

National Highways urged motorists to avoid the area between Junction 13 Stafford and Junction 14 Stone and consider alternate routes after three out of four northbound lanes were blocked.

National Highways said: "Following a collision involving a lorry and car between J13 (Stafford) and J14 (Stone) on the M6 northbound in Staffordshire, 3 lanes (of 4) are closed for recovery and clean-up work.

"This has resulted in approximately 9 miles of congestion as far back as J12 and a delay to journeys of 90+ minutes.

"Road users intending on using this section of the M6 northbound this afternoon are urged to consider alternate routes or delaying their journey until the scene has been cleared and delays have eased."

A short while later National Highways confirmed that the wreck had been cleared and all four lanes were reopened.

In a post on X, it said: " The car and lorry that collided earlier have been recovered and all 4 lanes are now open. There remains a 90 min delay and 9 miles of congestion from J11 but this should start to ease now."
