Musselburgh, a historic town located six miles east of Scotland's beautiful capital city Edinburgh, offers more than just top-notch fish and chips. The town's name, derived from the extensive mussel beds along its shore on the Firth of Forth, reflects its deep-rooted fishing tradition.

Musselburgh’s Coat of Arms, featuring three mussels and three anchors, is a testament to this heritage.

The town has developed significantly since the 12th century, emerging as a rival to nearby Edinburgh. With its port facilitating trade, Musselburgh thrived and continues to be lightly used for fishing and pleasure boating.

One of Musselburgh’s key attractions is its racecourse, the oldest in Scotland, dating back to 1816. Initially known as Edinburgh Races, the meetings were held on Leith sands before relocating to the picturesque meadows setting in Musselburgh.

Today, the racecourse is a VisitScotland Five Star Visitor Attraction, making it a perfect spot for a day out.

Golf enthusiasts will find the historic 9-hole Musselburgh Links intriguing. Used by James IV in 1504 and home to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers from 1836 to 1891, this course hosted the first Open Golf Championship. The record books date the course to 1672, making it the oldest surviving golf club in the world.

Musselburgh is also home to significant architectural landmarks. Newhailes House, built in the late 18th century by Sir David Dalrymple and recently acquired by the National Trust for Scotland, is a must-see. The Tolbooth on the High Street, dating back to around 1590, is one of Scotland’s oldest buildings of its kind.

The town's Mercat Cross, from the 1700s, stands on the site of the original medieval cross, adding to the historical ambiance of Musselburgh. The newly renovated Brunton Theatre hosts major dramatic productions throughout the year, offering cultural enrichment for residents and visitors alike.
