Ovarian cancer: New test could save thousands of lives
AN ovarian cancer test could save thousands of lives a year.
The disease, dubbed “the silent killer” due to its lack of clear symptoms, kills 4,500 British women a year.
The new blood test and risk assessment has proved accurate in US trials.
Study leader Professor Karen Lu, of the University of Texas, said: “We could be just a few years away from having the ovarian equivalent of a screening test for breast cancer.”
A study of the test is to be carried out at University College London involving 200,000 women. Professor Hani Gabra, of the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre, Imperial College, London, said: “The Americans may have found the answer.”
