Shadow rural affairs minister Jim Paice accused the Government of standing by and allowing it to slide into decline.
“When a village post office closes it has a devastating effect on the community,” he said.
The Countryside Alliance said: “Axing so many branches has ripped the heart out of many communities. It is an example of Labour’s dismissive treatment of rural Britain.”
But Post Office Minister Pat McFadden said: “We have increased support for the Post Office from £150million to £180million next year. David Cameron has refused to match that.”
