Stunned neighbours said the arrested teenager was the woman’s son.
The 53-year-old woman, who suffered several stab wounds, was airlifted to hospital where she was in a critical state last night.
She staggered out of her home before collapsing in her front garden, neighbours revealed last night.
A knife has been retrieved but officers would not comment on what led to the stabbing.
Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened inside the woman’s home at around 8.30am yesterday.
Paramedics who rushed to the semi-detached house found the man already dead and the woman barely alive.
She was airlifted to the specialist trauma unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
A post-mortem examination is set to take place on the 46-year-old man today.
An 83-year-old neighbour, who lives close to the scene but did not wish to be named, said the incident was “horrific”.
She added: “The emergency services were all here with their sirens blaring. I saw the police, ambulances and an air ambulance. It is an incident between neighbours.
“The man they arrested was the woman’s son.
“People said they saw the woman outside her house covered in blood in her nightdress after being stabbed.”
An ambulance service spokesman said: “Sadly despite the best efforts of the paramedics, a man was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman received life threatening injuries.”
