Police swoop to evict Calais ‘disco’ illegal immigrants
BRITISH-bound illegal immigrants were staging another “disco” when they were ejected by armed officers from a controversial new Calais centre, it has emerged.
The sprawling hangar was rented by local charities in defiance of a French ban on giving shelter to illegal immigrants. Calais officials closed it down earlier this month, amid fears it would turn into another Sangatte – the former Red Cross centre which was a magnet for migrants before being demolished in 2002.
As riot squads returned on Wednesday night to order migrants to leave, inside they were being served hot drinks and singing and dancing to a piano.
At 6pm, Calais deputy prefect Gerard Gavory gave police the order to evacuate the building. They blocked the door with a van.
Five charity workers were arrested for illegally offering shelter to illegal immigrants and have been released on bail.
