Covid-19: Dr Hilary discusses the impact of omicron on the NHS
Over the last month, the spread of the Omicron variant has led to unprecedented levels of Covid across the British Isles. On Tuesday the UK announced a new record for the number of Covid cases to be recorded in a single day with 218,724 cases. As pressures mount on the NHS, a number of hospitals have announced ‘critical incidents’ to meet the challenge of treating patients.
What does a 'criticial incident' mean for hospitals?
As of Tuesday a total of 12 hospitals, all in England, have declared what is known as a ‘critical incident’.
Rising staff absences due to the spread of Covid has contributed to the decisions being made.
The status enables those that enact it to receive assistance from nearby hospitals and other NHS trusts.
Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are among the hospital trusts that have signalled they could be at risk of failing to deliver vital care to patients.

Chris Hopson, Chief Executive of NHS Providers, which represents health trusts, said that it is a “sensible, planned thing to do” regarding hospitals declaring critical incidents.
He added that doing so should allow each trust to carry on giving the services that it needs to provide, particularly in critical and essential services.
